Situation

Competitor conventional lithium soap grease (NLGI 2, ISO VG 150) was used to lubricate roll bearings of the intermediate roll-table and a withdrawing and straightening apparatus of a continuous caster. High operational temperatures at the Arc-furnace steel plant caused frequent grease buildup in tubes, feeders and bearings from thickener-oil separation, as well as grease leakage from the bearings. This led to an increase in maintenance work and more frequent regreasing of lubrication points in order to compensate for the loss, resulting in high grease consumption and regular downtimes for system cleaning or replacement of tubes, feeders and bearings.

Recommendation

Mobilgrease XHP™ 461 lithium-complex grease was recommended to enhance lubrication efficiency and decrease grease consumption thanks to its characteristics as an extreme pressure grease providing excellent resistance to thermal, oxidative and structural degradation.

Result

Following the switch to Mobilgrease XHP 461 grease, the problem of grease buildup in tubes, feeders and bearings was minimized. With the blocking issue resolved, grease pumping to lubrication points was improved, enhancing the reliability of the whole system. Consequently, grease consumption was decreased by three times.
